Established in 1951, Yunnan Minzu University (YMU) is one of the earliest ethnic higher learning institutions in the People’s Republic of China, and it is a provincial key university co-built by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province. After having grown for over 70 years, it has become a comprehensive university with full range of disciplines and distinctive features, including 10 discipline categories namely philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, and has formed the pattern that equally stresses arts and sciences. Now YMU has more than 30,000 full-time students, of which over 60% are ethnic minorities, and there are over 600 students from more than 20 countries, and over 1,800 faculty members.
YMU is one of the earliest universities in Yunnan Province to enroll international students and offer them the Chinese language programs which began in 1981. It began to enroll the international postgraduates for master’s degree and doctoral degree respectively in 1992 and 2013. YMU has established cooperative and exchange relations with over 100 universities and academic institutions around the world, such as Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia , USA, Norway, Japan, South Korea, etc. YMU has received over100,000 international visitors from over 80 countries, many of which are well-known politicians and scholars. In 2023, YMU is ranked the 130th among the national comprehensive universities, the 2nd among the Chinese ethnic higher learning institutions, and the 4th of the Chinese universities most favored by foreign politicians and the 1st among universities in Yunnan Province.

云南民族大学创建于1951年，是中华人民共和国最早成立的民族高等院校之一，是教育部、国家民族事务委员会与云南省人民政府共建的省属重点大学。经过70多年的发展，现已成为一所学科门类齐全、办学特色鲜明的综合性大学，涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、管理学、艺术学10个学科门类，形成了文理并重、优势特色突出、多学科协调发展的格局。学校现有全日制在校生30000多人，其中少数民族学生占60%以上；有来自20多个国家和地区的留学生600多人，现有教职工1800多人。
学校是云南省最早招收国际学生、开展对外汉语教学的高校。1981年开始招收国际学生，1992年开始招收国际硕士生，2013年开始招收国际博士生。先后与泰国、老挝、缅甸、美国、挪威、日本、韩国等30多个国家的100多所大学或学术机构建立了合作交流关系，并与部分国外合作高校互认学分与学历证书。建校以来，80多个国家和地区的元首、政要、专家、学者和国际友人10万多人次到校访问参观。在2023年中国大学排名中，云南民族大学全国综合排名第130位，在全国民族院校中排名第二。在最受外国政要青睐的中国大学中排名第四，位居云南省高校第一。
